Successfull Icelandic athletes:

Judo

Bjarni Friðriksson won the bronze medal in the men's Half Heavyweight (95 kg) category at the 1984 Summer Olympics. He is now retired, but remains the most successful Icelandic judoka to date.

Football
Eiður Smári Guðjohnsen is an Icelandic football player who is a striker with FC Barcelona, having signed for the Spanish club in June 2006. For the six previous years he had been a midfielder/striker with the English Premiership club Chelsea. He is the captain of the Iceland national team and is often referred to as the greatest Icelandic player who ever lived.

Handball

Ólafur Stefánsson is an Icelandic handball player who currently plays for BM Ciudad Real of the Spanish Liga ASOBAL. His demarcation is right winger and in that position he has been referred to as the best for many years. In 2005 he transferred from SC Magdeburg to Ciudad Real after a successfull spell in Germany where he was voted the best player in Europe.

Badminton
Ragna Ingólfsdóttir is an Icelandic badminton player who is posistioned 55th in the World Ranking List. She won the Yones Cezch International 2006 and is now in a group of players which the European Badminton Union believes will qualify for the Olympics in Beijing.

Swimming
Örn Arnarson is an Icelandic swimmer who is a two time Olympian and was 4th at the Olympics in Sidney 2000. Silver and Bronze Medalist at the World Swimming Championships (2001). Six times European Short Course Champion (first gold medal won in 1998 at the age of 17 years). Three times he has received the recognition as the Sportsman of the year in Iceland.

Golf
Ragnhildur Sigurðardóttir is an Icelandic golf player who turned professional in the year of 2003. She has repeatingly won every domestical competion and was honoured  for her performance when she received the recognition as the Best Athlete in Reykjavík 2005.

Athletics

Vala Flosadóttir is an Icelandic athlete competing in the pole vault. She saw her heyday in the late nineties, when she set five world junior records and two world indoor records. Vala Flosadóttir won various competitions, the greatest performance being the bronze at the 2000 Olympics with 4.50m, a personal best.
